Characteristics Of Work
This is specialized training and development work involving compliance with professional standards of all training related activities conducted under the sponsorship of the Academy. An incumbent in this classification works with police chiefs, sheriffs, training officers, and individual members of the participating agencies for the purpose of determining training needs. Work includes developing training materials to supplement programs and employing appropriate standards and techniques for training. The training officer is directly responsible to the Director of the Mississippi Delta Community College Law Enforcement Training Academy.

Examples Of Work
The following are examples of work performed for positions in this job class and are not intended to reflect the essential functions of any one position. The essential functions of each position are determined and maintained by each office.
  • Along with the Administrative Assistant, the Training Coordinator develops and maintains a master schedule of courses
  • Coordinates, records, and reviews the test and examination process
  • Coordinates the basic and advanced training of all cadets-refreshers-advanced trainees for the academy
  • Develops Academy curricula along with the Law Enforcement Training Academy Director and other staff members
  • Enforces entrance requirements, academy rules, and regulations, and administers discipline
  • Monitors and evaluates instructor's performance for adherence to POST and academy standards
  • Provides input on equipment needs for the academy
  • Resides in the LETA facility with cadets during the basic classes
  • Supervises all instructors and assigns clerical help if needed
  • Supervises normal and emergency day-to-day operations
  • These and other related or similar duties are performed as required or assigned, (i.e. teaching classes)
Preferred Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in criminal justice, law enforcement, public administration, education, or a related field with ten (10) years of experience as a law enforcement officer or Graduate from a standard four-year high school or equivalent (GED), with fifteen (15) years of work experience, which includes ten (10) years of experience as a law enforcement officer.
 
Education Substitution Statement:
Above graduation from a standard four-year high school or equivalent (GED), related education may be substituted for four (4) years of the required experience, except there shall be no substitution for ten (10) years of experience as a law enforcement officer.

  • LawFit Certified Instructor
  • Taser Instructor
    Note: If the applicant is not Instructor Certified in the above areas, the applicant must be willing to be trained.
Physical Requirements
The conditions herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Primary functions require sufficient physical ability to work inside in an office setting, and outside in a law enforcement setting; restrain or subdue individuals; walk, stand, sit, or run for prolonged periods of time; occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; occasionally climb and balance; occasionally push, pull, lift, and/or carry light to moderate weights; occasionally lift and/or move moderate to heavy weights; occasionally lift and/or move heavy weights; operate office equipment including the use of computer keyboard; requires a sense of touch, finger dexterity, and gripping with hands and fingers; ability to operate a vehicle to travel to various locations; ability to operate and use specialized law enforcement tools and equipment including guns and handcuffs. See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents. Hearing in normal audio range with or without correction; ability to speak and hear to exchange information.

The work environment calls for work in weather conditions ranging from extreme heat and humidity to extreme cold and wet conditions.

Terms Of Employment
This position will be classified as a noncontractual twelve-month position.

Salary
Salary will be commensurate of education and certifications.
